Joe Crane is a Firefighter First Class- Paramedic with the Annapolis Fire Department (AFD) in Annapolis, Maryland and is currently assigned to the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division of the department filling one of the 27 authorized ALS provider positions allocated to the section.

Annapolis is Maryland's capital city and home to the United States Naval Academy. It is a center of government, culture, commerce, entertainment, and recreation and is world renowned as a visitor and tourist destination, boasting 4.5 million annual visitors. First settled in 1649, the city has served as the capital of the United States (1783-84) and is the location of the nation’s third-oldest institution of higher learning- St. John’s College. The downtown section of the city is a registered Historic Landmark and along with City Dock hosts a wide variety of sites making it a great place to visit or to call home.

The Fire Department exists to provide a safe environment for the community by minimizing the impact of fire, disaster, hazardous conditions, illness and injury through information, public education, quality service and efficient utilization of resources. It is an all hazards emergency service agency that provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue response, hazardous materials technical response, response to weapons of mass destruction, marine rescue/firefighting and bomb squad services.

The purpose of the EMS Division is to provide emergency and non-emergent health care, rescue and related services to the citizens and visitors of the City of Annapolis, and to provide medical transportation to the closest appropriate health care facility. The department utilizes three ALS transport units staffed with two ALS providers each and an EMS supervisor to provide this service in addition to the BLS equipped first response fire & rescue apparatus.

EMS responses have nearly doubled in the past decade with annual calls for service reaching nearly 8000. It is the divisions goal to maintain the highest quality and level of service to the City of Annapolis and they routinely meet this goal through the outstanding work of folks like Joe Crane.

(Incidentally, the subject of this web site should never be confused with folk singer Average Joe Crane. The Joe Crane that is referred to in the pages of this site greatly exceeds the mediocre and as far as FreeJoeCrane.org knows couldn't carry a tune to save his life.)

FreeJoeCrane.org was started as a way to champion the cause of Joe Crane and gather support to help convince the decision makers of the Annapolis Fire Department to approve Joe Crane's request for transfer from the paramedic unit to the engine company.

Joe Crane has no involvement in this website and no control over the content herein. The site was created by an individual sympathetic to Joe Crane's predicament and should, in no way, be construed to reflect the opinion, beliefs, or thoughts of Joe Crane.
